Shirakawago is a small remote village in the northern region of the Gifu prefecture. It is known for its very old thatched roof farmhouses, which have been a Unesco World Heritage site since 1995. Some of the farmhouses are more than 300 years old.
The day my travel companions and I arrived at the village was the day when a roof changing was taking place. This is when more than a hundred people will come together and work on changing the thatched roof of one house. It is a very big event in the small village.
