Antofagasta is the major port city of Northern Chile. The majority of Chile's mineral wealth leaves through this port.

The city is not as old as some of the other cities in South America, dating from the early 1800's. There is a nice central park in downtown Antofagasta with several statues donated by British ex-pates at the turn of the last century

The main Catherdal is directly off of the plaza.

• Pros:Friendly people very willing to help a gringo with a little Spanish
• Cons:Quite dusty due to the lack of rainfall
• In a nutshell:A good example of a blue collar city in South America
