Oslo an interesting portal to Norway

by SailorRoar - last update: Jun 6, 2008

My home now

The royal castle in Oslo
I am not originally from Oslo, but I have lived here for 8 years now. And like most people that lives here I hadn't seen much of the tourist attractions before I got a visit from a good friend from Australia last summer. So I thought I'd start creating an Oslo page and post some tips :)

Oslo facts

Oslo is the capital of Norway, the city has around 500.000 inhabitants, including the suburbs. It is located at the end of the Oslofjord, on the eastern side of Norway. Oslo is the transportation hub of Norway with plenty of air, train, bus and boat connections to the rest of the country and the world. Which makes it a perfect place to start your exploration of Norway.

Oslo attractions

But Oslo has a fair bit of attractions in itself. I would recommend a walk in the Vigeland Sculpture Park or Akershus Castle and Fortress, taking in the view from the Holmenkollen ski jump tower, enjoying a meal and a drink at Aker Brygge(Oslo Waterfront), a hiking trip in the woodlands around Oslo, a trip to the islands in the Oslofjord and a trip to the Vikingship museum at Bygdøy. Also worth mentioning is the changing of guards in front of the royal castle and the fact that the royal castle is open for visitors during the summer. And Oslo's new tourist attraction, the new opera house on the waterfront in Bjørvika, read more about it in my to do tip.

It was nice to see the city through the eyes of a local :) I will try to remember that Mongolian place in case I visit Oslo again in the near future.
