Marseilles was founded in 600 BC by Greeks as a trading port under the name Massalia. Today Marseilles is the center of a large metropolitan area, the second most populous commune and the second largest city in France.

I should avow long time I to have doubts about visiting Marseilles because of criminal situation there. I had heard about places in city where even police was in a funk.
Later I found out that the devil is not so black as he is painted. Surely if you are seeking trouble you will find it. Though awful stories about criminal situation is a little is history. Situation is similar as in any big seaport. If you like other big seaports or simply big cities and feel there safe nearly the same will be in Marseilles.
