Saint Petersburg Hotel Tips by sennaya

This Four-star Hotel opened in 2005 renovated from an 19th-century building on Rimsky-Korsakov Street. It's near Sennaya Ploschad and the Yusupov Garden on a way to St.Isaac Square and it is popular for tour groups.
It is a good value for those who prefer not to be on the busy Nevsky Prospect. One of the best accommodations for classical music and ballet lovers, near the Mariinsky theater and not too far from the Alexandrovsky Theater on Nevsky. It is probably a 30-minute walk to Palace Square and the Hermitage.
It has 255 rooms, a little quieter location than Nevsky Prospect (15 minute walk), yet close to Metro, buses, and Mariinsky Theater 10 minutes walk.

Unique Qualities: The top floor, the 9th floor, Le Vernissage restaurant has a very good view over the city towards St. Isaac Cathedral. Most buildings in St. Petersburg are 4-5 stories, the structural limit for the old brick and beam type of buildings.

This hotel is really gorgeous inside with 82 rooms and 20 suites.
People are really friendly and helpful.
It is a Marriott hotel, with the same discounts and programs as other Marriotts.

Unique Qualities: The view from the 6th floor terrace bar is the best view of St. Isaac's Cathedral.

There are a number of cottage businesses offering stays in local apartments in the center of Saint Petersburg.
Generally, they are upgraded housing from Soviet flats in the old buidlings in Saint Petersburg center. We have stayed at several.
I feel more like a local resident passing through the arches into the coutyard and into my tourist apartment.
Get local groceries, sit in the local cake and coffee shops and breathe the air :)
A search on the web for "Saint Petersburg Russia Apartment" will bring some ideas. I liked staying near Sennaya Ploschad. Close to Nevsky, close to the Mariinsky, close to Metro. It is the old Hay Maket that Dostoevsky made famous in his works. Now most has been renovated and it has some of the nicest shopping and restaurants, not to mention a 24-hour cinema near, better exchange rates than Nevsky and great transportation options.

Unique Qualities: Convenient and close to everything.
Sennaya Ploschad has 24 hour services and two Metro stations.
Walk to the Marinsky theater in one direction, or walk along the Gribeodova Canal to the Spilt Blood Cathedral or Sadovaya to Nevsky Prospect and Summer Garden.
Cathedrals, museums, shopping, architecture-- you wake up in the middle of it everyday.
The relaxing part of an apartment is that you will not be disturbed by maids or hotel clerks, you are in your own little spot. So you make your own bed, cook your own food, if you like. (But why? find the good cheap eateries within 1 block there will be plenty.)

Unique Qualities: Cheerful modern renovation.
It is one-bedroom and sleeps for 1-4 persons, one queen bed and one large divan.
It is completely euro renovation and fully furnished with light-color wood furniture, with hot water, washing machine, cable TV, DVD, music center, ironing board, dishes and so on. Just bring some clothes. See pictures for details.
Local phone and utilities are included.
It is a very convenient location in the center, near metro Sadovaya/Sennaya, between the Mariinsky Theatre and Nevsky Prospect. Metro station is a 2-minute walk.
It is a 15-minute walk to Palace Square and the Hermitage.

Big Hotel, over 700 rooms. Normal feel to westerners.
Open while under renovations in 2006-7.
A bit far from the Hermitage, near an hour walk down Nevsky, and maybe a few more bucks than some, but it is a lot less than the 5-star hotels.
Convenient to Metro, so you can get around quickly.
Several restaurants, many souvenir kiosks, you never have to leave the hotel.
A business center with only one internet computer, but it seems to be available most the time.

Unique Qualities: Mini-bowling downstairs,
a good post office for foreigners on the fifth floor

A big hostel with 39 rooms that say they are the only hostel in St. Petereburg that complies with International Hostel rules.

A room with 4 beds is 3000 rubles, a little over $100 a night, a best buy in the center.

Unique Qualities: It is on sadovaya Street near Metro Sennaya and a short walk to Nevsky Prospect.
