The old walled city

17 towers remain on the Kremlin walls Smolensk
One of the oldest cities, dating from 863 A.D.
It was attacked many times and was overrun by Napolean and the Nazis.

These pictures are from 1912 by Prokudin-Gorskii, photographer for the Czar whose collection went to the U.S. in 1918.

 I visited Smolensk in 1971. We went to the Assumption Cathedral and found the church packed with people of all ages and a service going on - a memory that has stayed with me all these years. leyle
