A possible but extremely rushed day trip from Taipei is Hualien and Taroko Gorge. It's worth a look to see the huge rock walls and the rushing river below, especially if you need a change of scenery from the hustle and bustle of Taipei. I can only imagine the hiking and hidden paths that lay hidden in the area. If you have more time, I'd recommend getting a car and exploring to get more out of the Taroko experience.
Granted I spent all of 2 days in Taipei and 1 day at Taroko Gorge, but I can be sure that this place ranks at or near the top of all the natural sights in Taiwan. The rain and low-lying clouds couldn't do much to dull the rich green color that covers much of the area. Even on the train ride down here, the fact that you were approaching a place of natural wealth was evident in the surrounding area. Aborigines made this area home many, many years ago, and this is a good place to learn a little bit about them as well.
The austere high rock walls covered with vegetation team up with the gray rage of cement-like water rushing below to make you feel like you're walking on a tight rope much of the time (and when you see the narrow roads, you'll think you practically are). And with the rain and cloud ceiling, it's almost like the gorge will close up at the top and you'll be swallowed into the river like just another rock that will be smoothed down to a pebble over time. Unfortunately, I could only stray along the tourist path and see what everyone else sees. But even then, what you see is an excellent sight to remember.
- Pros:Natural beauty and inspiration a few hours out of Taipei
- Cons:Crowds a big turn-off, better to go find the unbeaten path
