Air Force Girl

Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi was my first home. I was born in the base hospital -- in fact, my claim to fame is that I integrated the nursery, which didn't often see white babies in 1951 -- when my mother decided she couldn't make it to New Orleans for the delivery. She was very upset that I wouldn't get to put NOLA on my birth certificate!

We saw the barracks and hospital only once while I was a sentient human, around 1964 when we'd gone down south for Mardi Gras. I tried to stop in again when I was at a convention in Biloxi in 1999, but by then security concerns had made it next to impossible for people to wander around on military installations. I'm sure the base suffered significantly during the hurricane seasons which followed.
