There's just something about a Center of Power

Washington Monument through the cherry trees

Architecture, Art, Cherries...and all that POWER

Washington, D.C. is, candidly, a pretty strange place for a national capitol. It was swampy and prone to epidemics in bygone years. You can't get out of the city to a decent beach without braving hideous traffic, and unless you happen to be the President, getting to the mountains is a bit of a challenge, too. But suppose you want to stay in town? Ah, then you'll find much to delight the palate as well as the eye, plus you get to sample the indescribable sense of being in the midst of power. I dare you to wander into the Lincoln Memorial, or to the National Gallery, or to the Archives, and not be simply awestruck. This is a great and beautiful city.
The Washington National Cathedral

Did I mention the Moon Rock?

Every frequent visitor to DC has favorite places...the Mint, the Whispering Gallery, the Ebbits Grill. Mine would be the National Cathedral, which is stuck out there past Embassy Row and is finally (I think) completed. You can happily spend a morning or afternoon rambling around its many chapels. A major draw is the stained glass window into which a moon rock has been inserted. If you're lucky, you'll get to hear the Cathedral organist practicing. Better yet, come on a Sunday for one of the sung services!
The National Archives on July 4

The Best Place to Celebrate Independence Day!

Start your morning at the National Archives, where the Declaration of Independence is read before a skirmish is conducted between the Redcoats and the Revolutionaries, right there on Constitution Avenue. Then get in line and go see the real thing, right inside. Take a long break for picnicking at the Mall until it gets dark. Then prepare yourself for the splendid fireworks while the 1812 Overture is played. What a day! What a country!

Pros:"lots of marble, pandas, the Smithsonian Institutions"

Happy birthday! "Dragon's Breath" at Cafe Atlantico sounds like just the thing for a special occasion.
