Puerto Princesa - simple, beautiful, affordable

As soon as I landed from KL at 6:00 am in the morning, I took a shuttle to the domestic airport, a good 15 minutes away. Checked in and waited a good 2 hours + for my flight. There was not much that you can find to eat (I haven't taken breakfast) but then I managed to get some chocolates and a coffee.

As soon as I landed in Puerto Princesa, I walked out towards the main road by passing the rows of trix and taxis, and everybody yelling to get me in. I got a trix for the whole day at 500 pesos, and he did a good job driving me all over the places I wanted to go. I could not get on to a tour to take me to Sabang so I spent the night at Puerto Pension. Pretty good decent hotel but with tons of mosquitos. I went over to the mall about 10 minutes away and bought myself a cannister of mosquito flit and a tube of Go anti mosquito lotion. That's it, all mosquitoes either died or ran (flew rather) off.

I had lunch at Ka Lui - took their standard set lunch which was for 2 people, so I invited my trix guy to share the lunch with me. Cost me Peso 500. Food is good, setting is good, off to a glorious day.

Sabang - what an experience

I left the next day for Sabang - took a tour for Peso 1200 since I was alone. They picked me up at 7:30am and there were 5 of us with a guide. Trip was ok except for the rough roads nearing Sabang. Took us about 2.5 hours to reach Sabang Pier and went straight to the Underground River. We were quite lucky in that the day before, the boats could not set sail as the waves were too strong and so if that is the case you gotta walk the Monkey Trail, which I was quite reluctant not fancying the number of mosquitoes trying to stick a needle into me. Anyway, we went and the cave was so great. The whole journey from the Sabang Pier to the Caves and back, including the Cave canoe ride took also 2.5 hours. After lunch, it took us another 2.5 hours to return to P Princesa.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Still relatively unspoilt
  • Cons:Too many insects trying to stick their needles into me !!
  • In a nutshell:Lovely affordable decent and safe place
