Geothermal Wonderland

by scubaozgirl - last update: Dec 15, 2006

Rotorua

Erupting geyser at Te Puia
This is such a pretty little town.
Though it kinda smells a bit like rotten eggs due to the sulphur emissions in the air.

Rotorua offers so much, you can stand on active volcanoes, look into huge craters, see boiling mud, and watch the awesome erupting geysers. There are areas of unspoilt beauty, a real treat for bushwalkers.
There are many activities for the adventurous, white water rafting, jet boating, luge rides, so much to do. For the little more sedate you can take a gondola ride with a gorgeous view over the lake and town.
Time to move!!

Wai -o- tapu

I visited the Waiotapu themal park which was so interesting. This is a good one to visit as it is more natural to walk around..no pavements and less touristy.

The colours in the rocks, pools and craters are amazing and vary from purples, yellows, greens and orange. Derived from substances like sulphur, manganese and ferros.
Champagne Pool

Champagne Pool - Wai - o -tapu thermal wonderland

I was fascinated by the heat generated by this pool. The steam on your face feels just like a sauna. The colours in this pool are amazing deep blues, greens with a bright orange rim.
Well worth the 27 km drive south of Rotorua.
