BECAME.................ROTTERDAM A city with the largest freight port in the world owes it's name to the little river the Rotte, which was dammed up in the 13th century. Due to the construction of the 18 km long New Waterway ( 1866-1872), Peter Caland),
the city gained an open connection with the North Sea, which proved to be decisive factor in the city's economic development. |

At the outbreak of World War 11 in 1939, the netherlands again declared itself neutral, but in 1940 the German bombarded Rotterdam and overran the country.
The Dam, it is a city of huge docks, commerce, hardworking people and modern architecture. Nowadays, it's become one of the most modern cities in the Netherlands. |
