"To sit on the equator" Kalimantan (Borneo) by jeep2105

My original plan for my trip to Borneo was to go around the island in a circle. I had to give the idea up when I realized how difficult, if not impossible at times it is to travel on the Indonesian side of the island, Kalimantan. There are barely any roads so most travel is done by boat or plane. Getting from Pontianak to any other part of Kalimantan seemed virtually impossible so we decided to only visit this city before returning to Malaysia. During our short stay there we didn't encounter any other tourists and spent most of our time trying to find tour operators that would organise for instance white-water rafting (the operator that supposedly, according to footprint guides organised these trips had never done them at all). So unfortunately, with the little time we had we couldn't venture out of the cty and had to revamp ur plans.
Some of my general ideas about Pontianak:
-insane traffic, mostly motorbikes. Taxis are everywhere though it takes a while to realize which ones they are.
- very dirty unfortunately
-quite hard to get a grasp of on foot because of the many street markets and the difficulty to get close to the river without walking through someone's back garden.
-no tourists whatsoever
-very very cheap
-few people speak English, though everyone still tries to be helpful (and everyone says hello)

• Pros:remote, cheap, beautiful scenery
• Cons:difficult to get around
