The colors of the desert

by onfoot - last update: Dec 19, 2006

Why did I fall in love with Wadi Rum...

A vastness that makes one feel so small ... Real small
Where the normal daily tasks, such as drinking water, may take you to a long hike towards a lost spring in the rocks ...
Where extravagance has no place, ecxept in the number of the stars & sand grains!!
Only there I regain my balance ... learn -yet again- that the most generous people are those who give when they have nothing ....
Where words such as: Water, Shade & human beings get a totally new shape & form!!!!

......................................................................................................................

Sabbah = Morning

His name is Sabbah, which also means morning. To me he's not just another bedouin ... But he's a friend. I've known him for almost 6 years now ... and we have a weird funny relationship!
He was born in the desert of Rum, grew up, went to school, go marries had his kids and nourished his passion for climbing ...... He wanders around the desert as if he's wandering around a city ... where ther are signs & roads!!
And you don't want him to give you direction to get to a spring or camp ... coz his marking points would be something as insane as "under that cloud"!! But you would want him to be the one who looks for you if you are to get lost!!
He's the best mate you could have ... especially around the desert ...he has answers to it all ... if you're tired and thirsty , he knows the perfect little cool places where walls have drawings & little springs emerge! If you're hungry, he makes you the nicest food you can ever have. If you're bored, he tells you exciting desert stories spiced up with his wonderful sense of humour. If it gets cold at night, he keeps feeding the fire with branches to ensure that you stay warm. If you feel lonely & down, he's there for you. a real friend ....
Just ask for Sabbah .... Everyone knows him
