Kefalonia

Kefaloniais the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece with an area of 350 sq. miles. Location: 20?‹30' E, and between 38?‹12' and 38?‹18' N.

Mythology - History

Kefalonia was named after the mythic hero Kefalos who fought the original inhabitants of the island called Televoes. A very interesting place is a tiny island right of the south coast called Dias (greek for Zeus). A temple or shrine devoted to Dias used to be there but now an orthodox chapel is to be found.
Also another place well worth visiting is the underground lake of Mellisani. The roof has collapsed at one point allowing the light to create the most amazing scenery. Several artefacts have been found there indicating that the ancient Greek god Pan was worshiped down there.
Also there is a greek myth that says when god had lunacy in his bag so he can spread equally across the globe, the bag got ripped and the entire contents fell on Kefalonia.

Some General Tips

Kefalonia is a rather big but not very populated island. It is the perfect spot to escape the big city life. Most tourists that come here have goten some package deal and miss out big time on the island. They typically stay put in their area and go to the same beach every day. This is not what Kefalonia is about or better put can but this is not what it should be.
The amount of historical and cultural places to visit is rather small but the island makes more than up to it in natural beutty. So get some wheels and hit the road. Also get to meet the locals. They can be very friendly and entertaining.
