Beautiful, relaxing, awesome

Once we arrived in Tobago, we picked up a rental car and drove over to Charlotteville. It was a beautiful drive through very narrow, winding roads that took us past many villages. You have to slow down a lot to let the dogs, chickens and children get out of the road. At one point we saw the destruction of mudslides (several people were killed) resulting from the hurricane that had hit the islands a few months prior.

In Tobabo we stayed in a government building right on the beach. We were traveling with friends that have strong Trinidad/Tobago connections, and they were able to secure our accommodations. Charlotteville is a small village full of very warm, friendly people. There are numerous small inns there and a few restaurants. We spent most of our time on the beach, driving around in the countryside, and walking through the village.

The garbage trucks were not running that week since it was the week between Christmas and New Years, so the trash piled up higher and higher on the streets.

Many of the restaurants and shops were closed for the weeklong holiday too. The restaurant we ate at daily - Sharon and Phebe's - was really good. There are no fastfood chains there! There are no luxury hotels there! No cruise ships!

There is really no nightlife in Charlotteville, and people don't go there to party. They go there to relax. The beer from Trinidad is really good! I've read there is good diving there, but we are not divers so I can't personally comment on that.
