Talkeetna is the trailhead for many climbing expeditions on Denali and other neighboring mountains. The Alaska Railroad goes right through town. The graveyard by the Talkeetna airport is a very interesting place. It contains the graves and monuments to many of those who have lost their lives climbing Denali and surrounding mountains as well as bush pilots. There is a small museum in the downtown area, but then, much of the downtown area is a museum of sorts. The weather was in the low 70's the day we were there and Denali was completely in the clear all day long, a most fortunate occurrence. The only other time I have been to the Denali area, about 25 yrs ago, the mountain only showed itself once, for a brief minute.
We had a great breakfast at the Talkeetna Road House, right in town. Patty took a sightseeing flight of Mt Mckinley and landed on a glacier of the mountain. We walked along the railroad tracks and also along the river, in awe of the surrounding moutains.

Famous haunt of Alaska bush pilots and Denali mountaineers.

If you're looking for big city lights, you're in the wrong town.
