"North to Alaska" Alaska by bpwarne

In the summer of 1979 I drove to Alaska in a 1978 Chevy pickup with a 9/12 ft cabover camper. At the time we visited Homer, Ancorage, Denali, Eagle, Fairbanks, Haines, Skagway, Junneau, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Tok, Whitehorse & Dawson, both in the Yukon and Atlin BC. We drove the newly opened Cassiar Hwy (a dirt road) from Hazelton north through British Columbia, meeting up with the Alaska Hwy (also dirt at the time) somewhere west of Watson Lake, below Whitehorse. We spent two months driving around Alaska before heading south on the Alaska Ferry, with numerous stopovers before getting off at Prince Rupert in British columbia and heading east to the Mt. Robson, Banff and Jasper areas.

Denali

We spent 2 days in Ancorage in May, 2004. We stayed at the Sheraton in downtown Ancorage, not an overly exciting city or hotel. We rented a car and drove to Talkeetna for a day. We were very fortunate to have fantastic clear weather, Denali was completely in the clear the entire day. Talkeetna is the trailhead for many climbing expeditions on Denali and other neighboring mountains. We had a great breakfast at the Talkeetna Road House, right in town. Patty took a sightseeing flight of Denali which landed on a glacier of the mountain. The graveyard by the Talkeetna airport is a very interesting place. It contains the graves and monuments to many of those who have lost their lives climbing Denali and surrounding mountains.

We were in Ancorage prior to an Alaska cruise which embarked in Whittier, Alaska and ended in Vancouver, BC.
