Our first trip together to Saigon was very short. We were only in Saigon for a few hours, way too short to really see enough of it. We took the hour and a half hydrofoil ride from Vung Tau to Saigon and back. We did go to the roof of the famous Rex hotel for a drink and to take in the nostalgic view and we also saw the Holy Virgin Church, aka the Notre Dame Catholic Church, the post office, the old movie theater and we wandered through the Ben Thanh Market. Many beautiful sights. While many things have changed, much has not and it will always be Sai Gon to me, never HCMC. |
| | Here's an idea... We would like to return to Vietnam for a few weeks within the coming year or so. We would really like to either buy or rent a motorbike and travel the country for a few weeks. While buying for such a short period may sound a bit overboard, small Minsk motorbikes are relatively cheap ($700USD new) and parts/mechanics are everywhere (so we've read) and can be bought used for $400-$500 in good condition. Ride it, then sell it |
| | Still short on time... We did return to Vietnam in May of 2007 for a month and spent quite a few days in Saigon. When I arrived in late April, I spent three nights in Saigon before heading to Cambodia by way of the Mekong river. Eight days later I returned to Saigon to meet Patty when she arived from the USA. We spent two nights in Saigon before flying to Hanoi and beginning our slow trip back south to Saigon where we spent three more nights before flying home. While it all adds up to quite a few nights to have spent in one city, we were both sad to leave. We both wished we could stay longer. It was all too short, and even as I type this we are both talking about how great it will be to return and rent an apartment or Villa for a month. My wish is to return for an indefinite length, to stay til I know longer feel short on time...
We never did rent the Minsk motorbike although we did have occassion to rent Hondas in Dalat and Hoi An for as cheap as $3/day. Actually, Minsk is not as popular as I had read, especially in the south. Hondas are much more popular and would probably be a wiser choice for an extended stay.
We have added MANY reviews, tips, and pictures to these Saigon pages as well as to all our other Vietnam city's pages, so check them out below. We will be writing more about this trip and Saigon in the near future.
Third times the charm... I returned to Saigon inEarly April, 2008, enroute to Nha Trang, Sapa, and Dien Bien Phu and on to Laos. Only spent a couple days this visit, exploring old haunts, before taking the overnight train to Nha Trang. After three visits in less than 2 years, I still have not had enough. We are both thinking of returning in 2009 for a few weeks. |
