Varazdin is a small baroque town in Croatia (central Europe). It has about 50000 citizen. People usually call it "Small Vienna".
It is problably the most beautiful continental town in Croatia.
Varazdin was first mentioned in written form in the year 1181 (20th of August) in verdict of Croatian-Hungarian king Bela III. His first name was Garestin and it changed to it's final form - Varazdin through lots of names ( Guarestin, Guaradin, Warasd, Warasdin).
in 1776, there was a big fire in Varazdin. The fire destroyed the city to it's foudations. Nowaday, Varazdin would probably be the capital city of Croatia if it had a fire brigade that year.
The city hall of Varazdin is one of the oldest city halls in Europe (1523.). It was built in gothic style, after big fire (1176.) rebuilt in renaissance style followed by baroque style and todays it is in classicist style.
Grgur Ninski is one of the most valuable sculptures made by Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. Sculpture was made in bronze and intended to be placed in Split, but the autor wasn't satisfied with it's height so it was contributed to Varazdin in 1931. Grgur Ninski was the most important bishop of Nin and chancellor of Croatian royal court.
The spot where the culpture is placed today was chosen by the author himself. A bigger and a little different version of this sculpture is in Split.
