A Brief Look at Smartville Smartville is a small gold rush era town located along Highway 20 between Marysville and Nevada City. It resides in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Smartville is named after James Smart who operated a local hotel during the Gold Rush. Today, it seems a sleepy rural town, with a few historic buildings. |

atufft Tue Feb 24, 2009 04:39 UTC Huell Howser's CA Gold coverage focused on the restored name change spelling with an "s"--Smartsville :-) Apparently the Post Office corrupted the name as an efficiency measure. | Maria250 Wed Oct 15, 2008 19:20 UTC My grandaunt's dad moved from CA to AK w/company during the goldrush. Wish I knew which town that was. - Beautiful photo. | Ewingjr98 Sun May 4, 2008 05:23 UTC This whole towns seems to be off the beaten path.
