Lefty O'Doul's - San Francisco

Lefty O'Doul's

Lefty O'Doul's: Old style pub for food and drinks at Union Square

Francis “Lefty” O’Doul was a native San Franciscan and one of the great players of the game of baseball. He opened the restaurant and bar in the late 1950s and it has been a San Francisco "old school" classic ever since. They serve decent American food in generous portions in bit of a hoff brau style. The walls contain some nice woodwork and are decorated by old photographs. It's a great place to go for a meal, a drink, or both. Located just off Union Square, it is popular with the after work crowd.

They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Favorite Dish: Turkey dinner there is nice.

Street Vendor - San Francisco

Street Vendor

Hot Dog Street Vendors: Good for a Quick Bite

If you are in Downtown San Francisco and want either an inexpensive or very quick lunch, try one of the street venders with carts serving hot dogs and pretzels. For a few bucks you can grab a quick lunch. The vendors have warm hot dogs and cold drinks. An assortment of chips is available as well. On a sunny day, you can grab a meal from the vendor and go sit somewhere nice like Union Square. Union Square has a park like setting and makes for a pleasant location for an impromptu picnic. There is usually a vendor on the corner of Post and Stockton Streets right across Post Street from Union Square.

Comparison: least expensive

Directions: You can usually find on the northwest corner of Post and Stockton Streets.

Price: less than US$10

Belden Street - San Francisco

Belden Street

Belden Street: Sidewalk Dining Combined Suggestions Review

Belden Street in the Financial District is a narrow alleyway that is closed to traffic and features sidewalk dining. Several restaurants line the old alleyway. A variety of culinary offerings are available at the different establishments. As you stroll down Belden, be prepared to be approached by the maitre d’s who try to entice you into dining at their restaurant. Most of the restaurants have their menus available for inspection. It can be fun to check out the various places before selecting one.

The restaurants primarily utilize their rare outdoor dining option at this pedestrian friendly alley. It is a great place for lunch on a sunny afternoon or a warm evening. As this is San Francisco, it is advisable to be prepared for a change in the weather to the cold side when dining on Belden.

Directions: Belden Street is only one short block long and is between Pine and Bush Streets near Kearny Street.

Pancho Villa on 16th Street - San Francisco

Pancho Villa on 16th Street

Pancho Villa: An Authentic Taqueria

If you are looking for an authentic taqueria try Pancho Villa in the Mission. Pancho Villa is an established restaurant that serves outstanding burritos. They do offer other traditional Mexican fare. An army of food preparers stands behind the counter to serve the patrons who line up to order their food. If you order a burrito, you will be faced will choices for types of beans, rice, and salsa etc. Freshly chopped meat is within view next to the other ready ingredients. Chips are complimentary. The burritos are pretty big, so don't feel wimpy if you want to order a "baby" burrito, which is big enough for most grown people.

Favorite Dish: My favorites are the steak or the vegetarian "special" burritos.

Address: 3071 - 16th Street

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: It is located on 16th Street between Valencia and Mission Streets. From the 16th Street BART Station, you can walk the one short block.

Greens Restaurant beyond the Marina's East Harbor - San Francisco

Greens Restaurant beyond the Marina's East Harbor

Greens Restaurant: Vegetarian Food with a Touch of Zen

This classy vegetarian restaurant is located in Fort Mason and enjoys great views of the Marina and the Golden Gate. The building is located on a harbor and was once used to disembark soldiers to war. Now it makes a nice setting for a fine restaurant. Their vegetarian fair is quite good. Greens maintains a relationship with the Zen Center at Green Gulch across the Bay in Marin. The Zen Center provides produce used in Greens menus. On Saturday evenings, they only serve a fixed price menu, and the price is fixed a bit high. I would recommend reservations.

Favorite Dish: Don't miss their desserts

Address: Building A, Fort Mason Center

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: At Marina Blvd. and Buchanan St., turn into the Fort Mason Center.
