In September 2008, I spent a couple of days exploring the Hartford, Connecticut area. While not known as a popular tourist destination, I was pleasantly surprised. Downtown Hartford is a compact area that is easy to explore by foot. Also, there is a free bus shuttle (Star Shuttle) through the downtown area that makes visiting the major attractions very convenient.

Insurance is Hartford's major industry -- and many of the largest insurance companies have their corporate headquarters here. The Greater Hartford Area is also the home of many companies in the defense industry.

Bushnell Park
Bushnell Park - Hartford

Within the city of Hartford, there is a lovely park named Bushnell Park. It is an oasis of green within the heart of a busy commercial center.

    It has been a few years since I last visited Hartford, but I enjoyed the city too. Based on your tips and the excellent photos, it still looks quite appealing as a place to wander around in!

    The State Capitol looks magnificent...unfortunately, I haven't been to Hartford yet...but would love to walk with the family at the Bushnell Park -- nice green in the middle of the city! Norman :)

    Bushnell sounds like a nice place for a walk and if I came to Hatford I would like to go up in the Travellers Tower!

    Too bad that free shuttle service isn't more dependable, because in principle it's a great idea for making a city more livable by reducing automobile traffic. I never knew why Connecticut is called the Constitution State, thanks for the info.

    I don't think I heard of Hartford before. So thanks for the tour! I like free shuttle buses. The town center looks indeed relaxed and enjoyable despite the crime rate.
