"Altbier on the Rhine" Düsseldorf by BillNJ
Düsseldorf Travel Guide: 950 reviews and 2,162 photos
Düsseldorf is situated on the Rhine River -- and it is the capital city of the German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen (North Rhine-Westphalia). It is also a major business center, especially in the areas of advertising and fashion. Düsseldorf is part of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area which has over 10 million inhabitants. The city is renowned for its many events and also for its fashion and trade fairs.
Düsseldorf is also well known for its entertainment, especially its famous Altstadt district with its many bars, pubs, and nightclubs. The German phrase describing the Altstadt is "längste Theke der Welt" (the longest bar in the world).
In the many Düsseldorf bars and pubs, you will find the traditional beer -- Altbier. During my visit, I enjoyed some with my two great VT guides, Sabs (Sabsi) and Thomas (seppoman).
During my brief visit to Düsseldorf, I was very impressed by the efficient public transportation system of trains, trams, and buses. There is even a small underground subway line. Therefore, a tourist can easily visit Düsseldorf without having to worry about renting a car.
- Pros:Rheinuferpromenade, Altstadt, Altbier, Public Transportation
- Cons:More of a business city than a cultural center
- In a nutshell:Enjoy an Altbier on the Rhine

Very interesting information on the beer making tradition and drinking customs in Düsseldorf! Those palm trees reminded me of ones I once saw in 'warm' Cornwall, England. A most enjoyable page anyway I look at it!
I prefer the Kolsch to the Altbier, although they are both good!
Hi Bill, another page full of information. I must try to visit Germany for longer than 2 days. With 3 visits since 1993 I have a total of 4 days in Germany.
Sounds like you had a great tour of Düsseldorf! Nice tips Bill!
That was niec Sabs and Thomas showed you around Dusseldorf --- for some unknown reason, I have not yet visited Germany and so I am looking forward to going there. My first stop might be Berlin or Frankfurt...we'll see. Norman :)
Thanks for visiting my Alexandria page. Your Dusseldorf page is great; a good Altbier is one of my favorite drinks in the world! ~Joe
Glad you made it to Uerige, Bill. It's one of Germany's greatest brewpubs. Also, happy to see you met up with Sabs & Thomas, two of Germany's best pub crawling mates. Just remember, no water in the brewpubs and definitely no coca cola!
I was in Düsseldorf during the last Euro meet, and your descriptions make me want to visit again. Excellent page.
Thank you Bill for bringing back sweet memories about this city which I happened to visit once with very short stay! Public transportation is perfect in Germany, indeed!
I went to Cologne a few years ago, wish to see its rivalry city Düsseldorf ! Frank Gehry's building looks fun to me :)
