Langkawi, the legendary island

The lure of Langkawi

There must be something in Langkawi, so much so I go there at least twice a year - all made possible via great air ticket prices by Air Asia.

Langkawi is known for its laid back lifestyle and affordable shopping, being one of the 2 duty free island in Malaysia.

Historically, it was said to be a lengendary island where a beautiful lady named Mahsuri once lived. However, she was accused of adultery due to jealousy of womanfolk in her household and sentence to death. When she was executed via a spear, white blood oozed from her body and she cursed Langkawi to misery for seven generations. The curse is now said to have been lifted with the birth of the seventh generation of her lineage and ironically this is about time when Langkawi was being heavily promoted as a tourist destination. Coincidence?

Around Langkawi Island

Sights in Langkawi includes: Seven Wells, Langkawi Cable Car, Underwater World of Langkawi, Field of Burnt Rice, Black Sand Beach, Hot Springs, Wildlife Park.

Activities: Island hopping (eg. Pulau Dayang Bunting and Pulau Bras Basah), Mangrove swamp tour (with eagle feeding).

Langkawi Island has only a few main roads and it is very easy to navigate with a tourist map itself. So recommended to rent a car and drive, especially when you have more than 2 person in your group.

Pulau Payar Marine Park

A marine park approximately 45 minutes by boat from Langkawi.

The boat ride there may be a bore but once you reach, you will be awed. Pristine beach and immediate sea front filled with marine life. If you are snorkelling, you have the feeling of swimming in an aquarium.

Depending on which tour you take (Langkawi Coral or Coral Island), you get buffet meal on board, underwater viewing deck (good for non-snorkellers), glass bottom boat ride and free usage of snorkelling gear.

The lure is so great that I have seen people not intending to snorkel jumped in with their day clothes!!!
