The city of cranes.

"Leipzig" could be the word for "crane" in another language. It was one big building site as the former DDR was demolished to make way for 'reunification'.

Reunification, or West German takeover?

In 1994 it seems a process of cleansing all evidence of the DDR was taking place. 'Reunification' meant the DDR flag & DDR currency (until the Euro came in) were replaced with their West German counterparts.
"Bundesrepublik Deutschland", the name of former W.Germany, was extended to include the former east.
Motor vehicles lost their DDR registrations & were re-registered in the West German format (e.g. 'L' for Leipzig & 'MER' for Merseburg).
East German factories were taken over by western companies, e.g. Wartburg in Eisenach was taken over by America's GM to build Corsa & Astra models.

Reunification summed up.

This picture sums up Leipzig in 1994. Characterless West German cars surround East German Trabants on a building site.

I don't think Leipzig means crane - I researched it thoroughly - and that's not what I came up with ;-))) But yes.. there were a lot of cranes there when I visited.
