My second field season was spent up in the sub-artic in Churchill, aka Polar Bear Capital. Here I monitored the Semipalmated Plover populations. Another amazing area to see wildlife, especially birds. CNSC houses eco-tourists as well as researchers for a low price. I saw Beluga Whales, Hudsonian Godwits, faint aurora borealis, seals, Artic Hares, Polar Bears...many types of plants--I wish I knew their names! An absolutely amazing experience...

Oh, and I saw lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of geese and Ptarmagan (northern chickens!)

And bald eagles flew only 20 meters away from our vehicle.

Oh and I saw a Black Bear (what was it doing there?)

And caribou

Oh and I ate caribou...

ok ok I'll stop.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Wildlife and a taste of a very different lifestyle
  • Cons:Cold weather makes you want to stay indoors...when its nice out, the biting insects make you want to stay indoors.
