Heybeliada is a must-see little green island at Marmara Sea about 1.5 hr offshore from Istanbul Turkey( when travelling with the slow but beautiful and cheap classic ships--"ada vapuru"). It's original name is Chalki which comes from the greek word chalkos(copper) probably due to the existence of some very old mines there(in Byzantium times, now you can't find ithem).
The first impression you have while your ship eases the island is the lush green pine trees, incredibally beautiful. You see the cafes along the shore near the harbor where you can sip fine turkish tea(from the Black Sea region), and the naval school.
Another impression settles when you set foot to the island. There is no car traffic as we know it. Just some military or police vehicles here and there. You basically can travel everywhere on foot. There are however horse coaches. A nice move would be to circle the island with one of them, nice and easy(but not fast).
A nice historical place, besides some monasteries, to visit would be the Theological School of Chalki. An Orthodox institution which had been producing priests until 1971 but the government kept it shut since then.
You shouldn't expect to find superb quality waters for swimming. On the other hand you can eat well there. Try fried mussels (shish kebap style) or "kokorec" or "lahmacun"(meat pie) for meze(starters). Continue with some sort of kebap. You can find nice places to eat along the shore where the cafe district is.
