All mouth and no trousers, or a brief thank-you. My desire to visit Yemen was fired by an article in one of the heavyweight English Sundays in 2002 or therabouts.. Prompted by the kidnapping of some British nationals, everything in the text painted the lurid picture of a country with three guns to every person, battered Land Cruisers full of bearded mountain men with Kalashnikovs and an issue. STAY AWAY!!!
Accompanied by photos that said: VISIT THIS COUNTRY. NOW!!!!
In retrospect I am surprised that I had not encountered and been captivated by the extraordinary architecture of Yemen before then. For the buildings of Yemen are truly remarkable not only in form but in terms of the variety and exuberance of their external decoration. And they are set in a landscape equally dramatic and beautiful.

|  | I spent a month in Yemen, divided between bombing round in a Landcruiser visiting an unfeasible amount of the country in a ludicrously short space of time accompanied by an extremely entertaining guide and a steadfast driver and a week spent in the Hadramawt, staying in Sayun. And betweentimes hanging out in wonderful Saana. |
