I visited St Petersurg when it was (I think) still Leningrad. I was fourteen. It was all a very long time ago. England had just won the World Cup.
It was a school cruise visiting Stockholm, Leningrad and Copenhagen. The boat docked for five days at Leningrad while some boys took a train excursion to Moscow.
I remember the first day, the broad open boulevards, yellow stucco. I remember seeing a painting by Leonardo in the Hermitage. I remember drinking a curious pink drink from a street-vendor, like dentists mouthwash crossed with Dr Pepper.
That evening I was doubled up with stomach cramps, vomiting, the works. They pumped me full of antibiotics & in a few days I was right as rain: but apparantly I had had accute appendicitis & there had been a Russian ambulance at the quayside ready to whisk me to an operating theatre.
So I never got to see Moscow. and being not without shame, I havn't added Sweden and Denmark to my map.
I don't know whether the sickness was in any way related to to fizzy pink stuff, but it hasn't put me off street food and I've had little trouble since.
