I must go down to the sea again - Pill

Pill isn't the place it used to be. It's situated on the west bank of the Avon about half way between Bristol and Avonmouth (where the Avon debouches into the Bristol Chanel), taking advantage of a small inlet, and used to play an important part in the involved process of bringing ships upriver to the port of Bristol. Here incoming ships would pick up a river pilot, engage rowers to tow the vessel upstream or simply trans-ship their cargo. (As elesewhe noted, Bristol is in many ways a perverse place to put a port: it's advantage is defensability) The Roman port on the Avon was at Sea Mills, a mile or so upstream of Pill on the other bank)

It's a pleasant bike ride to Pill from Bristol, along a cycle track which more or less follows the west bank of the Avon.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:It's a nice bike ride along the Avon Gorge t get there
  • Cons:Not muc to do other than go to Avonmouth or back home.
