I've only been to Tangier on three occasions, and I've never entered it the 'proper' way, by ship. I feel this lack, and the next time I vist Morocco, old romantic that I am, I intend to approach the city from the sea, as its geography intends. But, cynical old wuss that I am, I've no intention of taking a train down from Blighty. It's all changed, and since I can't begin it properly, stepping off the boat train at Dover marine and onto the cross-channel packet, I'm afraid it'll be a flight to Malaga, bus to Tarifa or Algeciras. Because it's all changed. I can't step off the boat in Tangier and walk to the train station any more: the new station is on the outskirts of town. Nowadays the ports main traffic is trailers of vegetables destined for the markets of Europe.

Lots of people hate Tangier. I understand why. It's their first point of contact with Morocco: to a European or American it's an alien culture, and much as I love Morocco, it's a pretty full-on country and the insistant nature of the hotel touts who meet the ferries is not the best of introductions.

Approach the medina the other way, from the ville nouveau, without a rucksack or suitcase, and it's a different matter. You can wander the alleys unmolested. Tnagiers is a busy city and although tourism is part of it's business - and has been for long time - it's by no means the only game in town.

I will check the numbers. Must commence my Tangiers page sometime. We stayed in a grand hotel, photos of the movie stars of the fifties. Your photo looks like the view from our room.
