I liked Alexandria very much. It's by the sea, so the light is often fabulous, and there is abundant fresh seafood. And it's not a tourist town, so you are not pestered with offers of papyrus museums or perfumes.
History has not been kind to Alex. It should have two world class tourist attractions, but both are long gone. The Pharos eroded by time and finished off by an earthquake, so that all that there is to see of it now are scattered stones on the seabed (scuba diving tours are available): although its form (square base, octagonal tower, circular lantern) is memorialised by many minarets. And the famous library was burnt by narrow-minded Christian zealots. And ninteenth century power politics have resulted in the destruction of much of its Islamic heritage |

MM212 Sun Apr 27, 2008 12:57 UTC I chuckled on reading your warnings tip. I'll be sure to neither chew gym nor work out at a gum when I return to Alexandria. It's been decades since my last visit (and I'm not that old). Cheers from NYC! | unravelau Thu Dec 20, 2007 22:06 UTC The library is a must see....thanks for the great photos and tips.
