Al Khutayb

by TheLongTone - last update: Jul 23, 2007

Al Khutayb is a small village a few kilometres south of Manankhah. It is an important place of pilgrimage for the Ismaili sect of Islam, and boasts a large new mosque very much in the Iraqi style. On top of the volcanic plug which the village is built round there is a tiny and very simple mosque: this can be reached by a winding stairway cut into the rock. You have to slip the imam of the mosque some baksheesh for him to open the gate. It's a stiff climb but the view from the top is astonishing even in this country of astonishing views.
