It was a walking trip in perigord we were taking. S turned to me one morning in Sarlat and said "I love walking in the countryside, but I hate having to walk through three hours of suburb to get there." So we decided to look for a sleepy village with la France Profonde at its doorstep. Siorac seemed to be promising. The map showed a tiny speck with a rail station, so we got on the train and went there. Success! Siorac is a tiny village on the south bank of the Dordogne. It has nothing much to see--a rather plain church, an undistinguished chateau now used as village offices , a couple of bars, a few streets of pleasant enough houses, and that's pretty much it. Since it's in the middle of an almost unimaginably beautiful nowhere, it's perfect. |
