Amsterdam, can you smell it?

What a Marvelous City...

A typical canal/street in Amsterdam.
Amsterdam is a wonderful place to vacation! It's a big city with a very warm, small town feel to it. The people are beautiful and friendly...and of course, very liberal. Filled with museums, old churches, coffeeshops, pubs, the red light district, clubs, local beer, and wonderful restaurants...You will never get bored here!!! Simply walking the streets of Amsterdam is entertaining in itself. Regardless of the city life, you can definitely have a RELAXING vacation here. Relatively nothing is open before 9am and there are plenty of activities to enjoy way into the night...4am. My fiancee and I had a 9 day stay in Amsterdam, and believe me that ninth day was extrememly difficult, as we had grown very comfortable in that lovely city.

Musuems & Churches

If you're a museum lover, Amsterdam is a must! As an art history student, I was blown away by the museums in Amsterdam. My two favorite were the famous Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. The Rijksmuseum is probably the best museum I've ever been to. The building itself is massive and just beautiful, but of course it's the inside that's really amazing. Filled with incredible Historical artifacts and more than a handful of extremely famous Rembrant paintings, this place is a must see! For any Van Gogh lovers, the Van Gogh museum has more than 200 Van Gogh works!! Also, the churches all around the city are just breathtaking. For me, an American, I love the feel of an old church, a church where thousands and thousands of people have stepped foot inside, to the point where there are indents in the floor from so many people having walked there. You cannot miss them, regardless of your religion, and regardless of whether or not the church is still in use or not!

Coffeeshops!

Now, to really peak your interest... Everyone is constantly asking me about the availability of drugs, specifically marijuana, in Amsterdam. What a treat the coffeeshops were! We visited several on our trip--each shop has its own personality, decor, and strains of grass. You should definitely visit a variety of the shops to find which ones suit you. In general, these places are incredibly friendly and of course, chill. Whether or not you are a smoker, you should check into a coffeeshop either simply for coffee...or for much more! :P
