Welcome to the travel page of an "Arctic Monkey"

by annase - last update: May 22, 2009

Can you spot the clouds on the water saying "Hi"?
Hi ya folks. Welcome and thanks for reading my travel page.

There are lots of really great pages on VT and one day, I'm hoping that mine will be amongst those.. :-)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Happy travels to you all and I hope you'll make the best journeys ever in 2009.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was told a new thing about an old photo of mine the other day. Apparently the clouds on the sky form a word "Hi" on the surface of the water. This intriguing fact was pointed out to me by a fellow VTer BarryAir from Louisiana. Thanks a lot Barry!!!

Past travels

During the past 10 years, I have been travelling mainly in Europe. I have driven through the continent by car, travelled from one country to another by train (i.e. done the inter rail thing) twice with my friends and stayed in several youth hostels and other budget accommodation. After having been based in the Netherlands and Belgium for a couple of years, all the neighbouring countries and their cities such Cologne, Paris, Lille and Frankfurt have become fairly familiar. I have also been further to the East, North and South-East of Europe such as Poland, Czech Republic, the Baltic States, Cyprus, Italy and Spain.

Two years ago, in 2007, I finally also managed to venture outside Europe for the first time, as I went to New York City in April. I really loved the trip and I though the city was absolutely fab. In 2008, I made my first ever trip to Finland's eastern neighbour: the mighty Russia. It was a day trip to a city that used to be part of Finland before the WWII, Vyborg (Viipuri in Finnish). This trip was really good too. I am so pleased I have been to the country now, since it's a very interesting place, indeed.

Current and future trips

2009

In 2008, I packed virtually all my belongings and headed for a new life in Helsinki, Finland, after nearly 8 years in the UK and the Netherlands. Since I moved back to Finland, I haven't got much holiday to do long trips, which is a shame. I have discussed potential short trips of 2-4 days to as exotic destinations such as Reykjavik (Iceland) and Moscow (Russia). =))) If I had a proper holiday (a week maybe) I'd love to go to Marrakesh (Morocco). I would love to go someone warm and far away once this year. We'll see where.

***A wish list***

In the years to come, I'd love to explore other continents besides Europe a bit more. I'd really love to visit China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Kenya, Tanzania, Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean. I have not seen very many countries at the Mediterranean either, so they are also within a shout when choosing sunny destinations ;-) For instance, Morocco, Lebanon and Egypt interest me for sure.

Whether I will make it those regions is a different matter, but I'd love to..
one day!

Why do I call myself an "Arctic Monkey"?

For almost a year, the first line of my page said that I am an "Arctic Monkey" living in the United Kingdom. I have now removed the UK bit, since I no longer live in the UK, but I wish I could actually change my member name to an Arctic Monkey if it was possible, since I like the name.

The name really came about since I lived quite a long time in the UK, and every now and then, I found myself being sort of stuck in between two cultures and probably seemed to be acting bizarre from the natives' point of view (although they'd never say that to you).

The name itself derives from the name of a British indie rock band from Sheffield, "The Arctic Monkeys". I found it pretty well suited (although I'm not into indie rock at all), since I used to live pretty near the Arctic circle in my youth.
