The DELI,53 Le Duan Street,Ha Noi,Vietnam.
This is a small, clean, eat in or take away restaurant about a five minute walk from the train station.
We searched for something exactly like this before our train journey up to Lao Cai…and long story short…VOLIA…here it was…just a stones throw away from the station on Le Duan Street.
It was a little bit busy when we were there so the service wasn’t the fastest but what arrived was what was ordered (ALWAYS a good thing) and it was very inexpensive.
If you’re looking for something FAST and EASY before you head out on the train from Ha Noi…you might want to stop here for something to take away or you can sit and eat at one of the five or six tables.
From the train station…you’ll find this little place on the opposite side of Le Duan from the station…turn left…and its about 200-300 meters down the street.
Favorite Dish: The menu was varied and prices were CHEAP. You can find here easy foods like sandwiches, salads, burgers, and hot dogs, noodle dishes and deserts. Kevin had a LARGE salad that was loaded with fresh greens and tomatoes…I settled for a small pizza and I cant remember what else, so perhaps this isn’t too helpful except that its proximity to the train station was a God Send.
I know that Kevin ordered a falafel to go in addition to his meal, something that would travel well for a snack on board. It arrived well wrapped and bagged.
Address: 53 Le Duan Street,Hai Bà Trưng District.
Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: Just down the road from the train station on Le Duan Street.

Hong Chau ,66 Hong Bo Street,Hoan Kiem,Ha Noi.
This restaurant was recommended to us by the hotel staff where we stayed and it was an easy fifteen minute walk from the Heart Hotel (close to Hoan Kiem Lake). We liked it so much that we made it there a second time for a dinner serving
The main floor seating consists of maybe nine tables. There is an upstairs section that I did not visit. I had been walking all day…and I didn’t feel like making the trip of the flight of stairs…that’s how pooped I was.
The ambiance was fine, the furniture quite sturdy, heavy wooden chairs and tables and in case you’re allergic to smoke…it’s NOT a smoke free environment
We had been on the road at this point for just under four weeks…this was the first time we both had eaten anything remotely western…so in a way it was kind of a treat for us..
The service was quite good and the food was really good…the location about a fifteen minute walk from our hotel close to Hoan Kiem Lake. If you’ve been eating nothing but Vietnamese foods and you are interested in a change of pace when you’re visiting Ha Noi…check this restaurant out …I think you’ll be more than happy with your meals!
Favorite Dish: The menu was pretty extensive and consisted of Vietnamese cuisine and some western dishes. The first night that we eat there I enjoyed a steak just to eat something different. I think it’s the first and ONLY time I eat a steak during my four week adventure exploring Vietnam. It was served with a sauce which I honestly can’t remember and some roasted sweet potato or yam. I do remember that the meat was tender and I enjoyed it tremendously in spite of the sauce. I don’t normally enjoy sauces on meat but this one occasion I was hungry enough that it didn’t matter.
The second visit I had a Hong Chau version of lasagna that also was quite tasty. I don’t keep a diary …and unfortunately I can’t remember what Kevin ordered…we were BOTH completely satisfied with our meals both times that we eat here!
Although we didn’t eat deserts they looked quite good as they passed by our table
The costs were a considerable amount more than what we had been paying for meals…but still I think my steak was about the equivalent of about $ 8.00 USA.

Comparison: more expensive than average

Quan An Ngan,15 Pho Phan Boi Chau,Ha Noi,Vietnam.
We were introduced to Quan An Ngan by LouAn and T, the Hanoi Kids “companions” that we spent time with on the second day we were exploring Ha Noi. We made a second trip back here, the food was excellent, and the ambiance was fun. It’s an informal eatery and there is NO dress code, Im sure you’re surprised to know that.
It offers a choice of outside seating under a kind of canopy or you can sit “indoors” under roof.
This is a busy place and packed full of mostly local people with the odd tourist mixed into the scene. We didn’t have to wait long for a table, there was a constant flow of people coming and going at the same time so its large enough it seemed that the turnover was pretty fast.
It’s probable that you will sit with other diners here as the tables are quite large and you will not have a private table, a good thing because it obviously enables you to meet others. I guess you roll the dice right as this isn’t always a good thing!
The only draw back I suppose was that the menu was totally in Vietnamese and this could be a small problem if you aren’t able to speak or read Vietnamese. We managed well with the help of LouAn and T but upon our return the second time to eat here, we ended up with food that both of us, we decided, was NOT what we thought we were ordering. Nevertheless we eat well …and enjoyed conversation with people that were sitting next to us.
We used a taxi to get us to and from where we stayed near Hoan Kiem Lake. Its certainly walkable from the Old Quarter, something that I would do during the day, but after being on the move all day long…a taxi was easiest and the cost minimal.
Favorite Dish: The food was quite good and the service was quite all right. The prices were certainly acceptable and the variety of foods available was quite extensive. The menu was quite large and totally local cuisine…not a single item that could be considered “Western”.
Address: 15 Pho Phan Boi Chau,Hoan Kiem District.
Comparison: about average
Directions: Between Ly Thuong Kiet and Hai Ba Trung, one block East of Le Duan
