I've been to Ashland a couple of times. The most memorable has been the January weekend that I spent there between two business locations. Summers are warm and pleasant. The odor of pine. Lots of things to do. Visit the Islands, watch the boats, sit along the shore and enjoying the waves.

Winter on the other hand, brings a whole new set of experiences. Head up the road towards Bayfield and the Apostle Islands? Sure, but be prepared for snow. It dosen't seem to matter how blue the sky is in Ashland, up the peninsula to Bayfield, winds from any direction (except the south) come across the lake and deposit snow. It will be snowing. None of the summer tourist places are open. The restaurants all do a brisk business. It's warm inside. Just getting out to eat can be an adventure. It's -15 degree F (-26 c) at noon. The wind will be kicking up at about 10-20 mph (16-32 kph), so it can feel another 20 degrees colder. NOTE: at -40, both fahrenheit and celsius are the same.
