"This ain't no California Valley Girl's home" Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area by Toughluck

The Crooked River
Seek and ye shall find

The vallies riches are nestled into small corners, waiting to be discovered for the first time by each visitor. Natural wonders abound in the animals and birds drawn to the waters of the river and the wetlands the grow in every bend. You'll want to find a place to park and walk the trails. A short walk can bring you to Blue Hen Falls. Tucked in a small ravine, this walk gets you away from the crowds and the noise of traffic. For those less inclined to the out of doors, you can drive nearly to the brink of Brandywine Falls, the largest in the park. Boardwalks lead to a viewing platform, where the mist can be felt on a warm summer day.

Country drive in the City

The valley streatches from the industrial valley of Cleveland to the industrial heights of Akron, taking a wide bend back to the northeast where the river begins in a series of low marshy farm lands east of Cleveland. The Heart of the Valley is the 14 miles that runs south from Rockside Road, the southern boundary of the City of Cleveland to Bath Road, the northern edge of Akron. Even a short drive into the valley finds a sudden change from industrial and residential to rural. Out of sight on the uplands there may be more residential and commerical development, but all evidence of it becomes lost in the greenery and meadows of the valley.

At intervals along your drive, you will be joined by other waters flowing into the Cuyahoga River from various Cleveland and Akron Metro-parks. Historic homes and business' from the early 19th century lightly dot the landscape. You'll see the Frazee House (1830), the Canal Visitor Center (1820's), the Boston Store (1836), Everett Village, the Hunt Farm, and Hale Farm and Village (1820-1850). Your entire drive will be along the Ohio & Erie Canal which opened in 1827.
