The park has been set aside to preseve the pre-historic ruins of the ancient pueblo peoples. The ruins date from the 1200's or 1300's. Early on, visitor came to this canyon to see and investigate the mounds that formed over the ruined buildings. By 1930, the Frey family operated a few log cabins in the canyon as lodging for these visitors.

During the Great Depression the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) was created to train young men in the trades and to restore
