Candy n Gifts - Valparaiso
American Legacy: Candy n Gifts

Located on Lincolnway across from the Courthouse, American Legacy has a variety of home decorations, miniatures, books, and nik-naks featuring American images, buildings and lifestyles. Much of it reflects the rural life that is fast disappearing.

Go for the building, not just the shops - Valparaiso
Wark's Place (okay Bangles): Go for the building, not just the shops

The shop includes high quailty, sytlish womens clothing. More for the 'upper class', which the U.S. isn't supposed to have.

What to buy: Like I implied, I go for the building. Built in the early 1900's, it served as a hardware store for nearly 100 years. The original stamped tin ceiling, brick walls and plank floors have been lovingly restored and showcase the clothing and accessories.

A little bit of Spain in Indiana - Valparaiso
Spanish Imports: A little bit of Spain in Indiana

I've not been in yet, but from the window, there are spanish clothes, crafts, home decorations. Right next door to Don Quijotes, it evokes a little bit of Spain.

Last of his kind - Valparaiso
Buck's Shoe Repair: Last of his kind

The only place I've found that you can take shoes in and have them fixed. For $20 (or there abouts, you get new soles on $70-$100 shoes. They're good for another 1000 miles or 5 years.

Alternate life? - Valparaiso
Lifestyles: Alternate life?

Are you looking for just the right gift or do you have a 'hankering' that can't be filled? Try Lifestyles. This is a unique store of gifts and merchandize. Candles and cards may appear to be their main stock in trade, but you'll find that wierd puzzle, a strange puppet, that kitchen tool that's eluded your grasp for years. It's all here. If you can't name it, but know you need it, they probably have it.

Address: E Lincolnway

Directions: Located on the hill, east of the Courthouse.

Greg's and the Grave - Valparaiso

Greg's and the Grave

Galactic Gregs & Shallow Grave: D&D or lightly used CD's n DVD's

Galactic Gregs and Shallow Grave share the same street front (no sidewalks in this part of town) store. Greg's on the right and SG on the left. You can be put off by the neighborhood, which is an old commercial strip that is beginning to improve in its looks. The area is safe and kids hang out at Gregs, which is the Valparaiso home of Role Playing Games. Most afternoons and on weekends, the back of the store is full of young people at their games. If you've heard about Dungeons and Dragons, here you'll find the real thing going on and there are no dungeons and a few dragons. Decent kids having a good time. My generation had the bookshelf games about WWII or other wars. This is the modern version.

What to buy: Gallatic Greg's - collector comics, role playing supplies/books, characters, and collectables.

Shallow Grave - It changes every week as people bring in their old music CD's,DVD's and video games. Some of which is not very old. Several months after the holidays, many 'like new' items show up that were watched or listened to and then sold to SG for resale to you. I've found the latest movies and a few hard to find items. It's always different.

What to pay: Expect to pay the going fare for items in Gallactic Greg's. It is a specialty shop and collector's place. At the Shallow Graves, you'll find everything at 50% or a little more of the shelf price elsewhere. The stock of VHS tapes has been dropped to a dollar or two

Address: 1407 Lincolnway

Directions: About midway between downtown and US 30 along East Lincolnway in the Eastgate area. Look for their sign on the north side. It's what stands out.

Coins & Jewelry galore - Valparaiso
Engstrom's AmeriPawn: Coins & Jewelry galore

Don't let the name fool you. It's a top quality jewelry store and the only Coin Shop in the county. The parking can be tight, but the choices inside are very open. The back of the store has the heavier items and the pawn desk. In the middle are coins, music instruments, music cameras and related electronics. Up front as you come in it the jewelry section.

What to buy: They have many collectibles. Want a birth year set of coins for a new born? Graduation coming up and you'd like a one of a kind item? For the young kids just starting into coin collecting, there are inexpensive coins (penny's, nickels, dimes & quarters) to being putting a collection together. If you're a collector there are bullion coins and rarer silver coins.

What to pay: Everything is at a good price, but as a pawn shop, much of it is used.

Address: 1415 E Lincolnway

Directions: It's a part of the Eastgate section of East Lincolnway.
