I like visiting islands! It sounds a bit strange taking into consideration that the main hero of my story is a continental area. For sure, in geographical meaning, Andalusia is not an island but...

Just after I decided to organize short trip to Andalusia first idea which reached my mind was: this is too big land to visit the whole area during 14 days journey. And I considered not the very rich list of famous Andalusian landmarks and cities (Sevilla, Granada, Cordoba, Malaga, Ronda, Gibraltar etc.) but above all the opportunities to feel the provincial atmosphere of this region. So...
I took the virtual scissors and cut the part of Andalusia. And this way inside this land - my island was created.

Mediterranean Sea sunset

This island west coasts were located on the line draw from Marbella up to Ronda and Antequera, north were created along the express road A92 (Antequera - Granada), east along the road A44 (Granada - Salobrena) and south, naturally along the Mediterranean seashore. Once I organized the trip outside these boundaries to the small and charming land called Las Alpujarras.

In the next tips You will not find exhaustive descriptions with all the useful addresses. This is mainly set of impressions. It's bad or good but my mind is working like camera shutter recording moments, places, details, situations.

Having spent a week in Andalucia in March, I enjoyed being reminded of some of the places that we visited and seeing others that we didn't. We found Antequera to be an excellent base. Peter.

A very enjoyable page with fantastic photos of this unique area! "Sleeping Indian Head Chief" looks about right to me! Loved your tips on Competa, Ronda, the viaduct and Las Alpujarras! My wife and I made a few drives into your 'island' too.

Great idea about creating your own island of stunning landscape and charming little towns :) Loved the architectural details!! You are right about the cemeteries - I also visited some very unusual ones on my SA trips. Very beautiful pictures Piku!!

I've managed to see only small part of this wonderful part of Spain. Thank you for showing me what I missed to see... Especially I liked aqueducts, bridges and rocks.

You summed up these Spanish towns very well We used to go every winter to Nerja - enjoyed an excellent restaurant on the beach in Salobrena - Los Sardinas. But it all got so over developed we could not face it any more. Glad you found the quietest spots.
