We have wanted to visit Costa Rica since we learned that the country abolished its army in 1948. And the more so since the country scores highest on the Happy Planet Index. We think these two facts are related.

In March 2012 we spent a month in Costa Rica. Helen had been there once ten years earlier, taking a Spanish course. Tourism in Costa Rica has seen rapid development in these ten years, but regrettably it has also become much more expensive.

We stayed several days in Alajuela, making day tours with this town as base. Then we rented a car and set out farther. See also our Cartago page.

Very much enjoyed this page. When we returned from our visit to Costa Rica in March, we enjoyed it so much we'd love to go back for another visit. We had an art lesson with some members of the Maleku tribe & enjoyed it very much. Also saw Rio Sucio & Rio Blanco which was quite a sight! My favorite part was whitewater rafting on the Sarapiqui!
