"Saramacca district" Distrikt Saramacca by theo1006

Saramacca is an essentially agricultural district. In 1845 a number of Dutch farmers settled here, however within five months half of them succumbed to the climate and disease. A monument in Groningen village square commemorates 150 years 'boeroes' settlement.
Nowadays it is good and quiet living in Groningen. We visited relatives who retired here from active life in the Netherlands.

Jarikaba banana plantation

Bananas ('bakoven') are now a major export commodity of Suriname. Many of them come from Saramacca district. Jarikaba plantation is just across the border with Wanica district.
