Merapi Resto dining room - Prambanan

Merapi Resto dining room

Merapi Resto: Klaten's best

Returning from Deles Indah on the slopes of Merapi we wondered where to have dinner in Klaten: no great restaurants in Klaten that we knew of. Then we happened to pass by Merapi Resto. It looked new and attractive. The ambience is indeed great, on the border of town amidst paddy fields and fish ponds. You have the choice between a shaded restaurant room at the front or so-called lesehan gazebo's at the back. Interesting detail: the owner keeps some exotic animals in aquariums - not for food.

Favorite Dish: The dishes we ordered were as good as can be expected for the modest prices aimed at a domestic clientèle: shrimps in sweet and sour sauce, broccoli and kangkung with beef.

Address: Jalan Merapi, Gayamprit, Klaten

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: Spot the big signboards on the main Solo-Yogya thoroughfare through Klaten or on the northern Yogya-Solo alternative road. They point to Jalan Merapi and the restaurant lies not farther than a km along this road.

Kali Opak Resto on the river bank - Prambanan

Kali Opak Resto on the river bank

Kali Opak Resto: A hidden gem

A hidden gem! We saw the small signboards and decided to see where they led: through bamboo groves into a small hamlet where one would not expect to find a restaurant.

Kali Opak Resto is situated on the bank of Opak river, shaded by greenery and therefore surprisingly cool. The owner, mrs Rina Ismawati (mobile 0858.6859 0163) has developed her restaurant since 2002. Her main clientele consists of tourists guided to her place by tour leaders. Across the road her husband has opened a souvenir shop where wayang performances are given.

If you go to see the Prambanan ballet, you can previously have a buffet dinner at the venue for Rp 70,000. But we found it more attractive to have dinner at Kali Opak Resto, accompanied by the sound of running water. The menu is varied, the food tasty, and the prices are very reasonable.

Favorite Dish: Our company of five had shrimps in sweet-sour sauce, grilled gurami fish, sate ayam and bakmi goreng, all excellent.

Address: Ngablak hamlet, Bokoharjo village, Prambanan district, Sleman regency.

Directions: At the western border of Prambanan village, just across the Kali Opak bridge, take the road north past the Prambanan ballet venue. Near Puri Devata Resort the road bends to the right and crosses Kali Opak. Across the river take the first village road left, through bamboo groves. Beyond the groves turn left again into Ngablak hamlet. There are small red signboards indicating the turnoffs.

Comparison: less expensive than average

Tasting a 'soto ayam' - Prambanan

Tasting a 'soto ayam'

Prambanan Garden Restaurant: For a well-deserved refreshment

After walking all the way to Candi Sewu and back, we thought we deserved a snack. There was Prambanan Garden Restaurant, quite nicely decorated. The service was friendly, the prices small, but - it must be said - so were the portions. The bowl for our soto ayam was rather smaller than usual.

Comparison: least expensive

Directions: East of the main temple complex

Price: less than US$10
