Quiet and spacious Purworejo city provides a stark contrast with busy and crowded Yogyakarta at 50 km to the east. Consider going here when you are fed up trying to avoid souvenir sellers. Centre of town is a large square about 200 m wide. The grassy square is empty except for two holy trees in the centre. They must be holy because they have names. The one in the photo is called Ki Soeryo Putro, the other one Ki Dewo Atmojo. |
| | The regent's office The regent's office is located at the south side of the square, his residence ( kabupaten) faces it at the north. At the west is the Great Mosque, and a church stands at the east side of the square. Official website of Purworejo regency (in Indonesian): Purworejo |

| | Historic importance Purworejo regency, more specifically Bagelen district, is of historic interest, because it was a centre of resistance against Dutch colonial rule. This started early in the 17th century when Sultan Agung resisted the VOC (see Tip on Bagelen mosque) and was repeated during the Java War (1825-1830) when Bagelen was a centre of the resistance by prince Diponegoro. This explains why the Dutch established a strong garrison in Purworejo (see OTBP tip Black Dutchmen). |
