Eldoret is a town in western Kenya and the administrative centre of Uasin Gishu District of Rift Valley Province. Lying south of the Cherangani Hills, the local elevation varies from about 2100 metres above sea level at the airport to more than 2700 metres in nearby areas (7000-9000 feet). The population was 193,830 in 1999 (census), [1] and it is currently the fastest growing town in Kenya, and currently the 5th largest in Kenya.
Take a look at a homestead; You will find a lady busy with the usual household chores. Sheep and goats have been let out, the cows have had their morning drink at the river having to walk around the tents, and the cooking is going on. Inside the kitchen, the handmade stove is ablaze with firewood, little escaping from the sides so as to make the most efficient use of the precious fuel. Above are the calabashes, adding a dash of deco in the earth walled kitchen. The "sotet" or calabashes are used to store mursik, the traditional sour milk of the Keiyo.
For both males and females, becoming an adult in Kalenjin society is a matter of undergoing an initiation ceremony. Traditionally, these were held about every seven years. Everyone undergoing initiation, or tumdo, thereby becomes a member of a named age-set, or ipinda.
After male youths were circumcised, they were secluded for lengthy periods during which they were instructed in the skills necessary for adulthood. Afterward, they would begin a phase of warriorhood during which they acted as the military force of the tribe. Elders provided guidance and wisdom. Today, age-sets have lost their military function, but still provide bonds between men of the same set.
