Leave Malta behind

Most visitors discover Gozo on a day trip from the more well known island of Malta. Many of those day trippers(myself included) will never again stay in Malta. Access is by way of a half hour car ferry crossing to Gozo's main port, Mgarr. A bus awaits to take you to Gozo's capital city of Rabat (renamed Victoria after the British threw out Napoleon and occupied the islands up to 1964). Gozo is greener and more rural in character than Malta and has resisted the march of intrusive tourist development although there is a good range of accommodation from good quality hotels, villas and apartments. Gozo is a relaxed, friendly place with plenty to see and do but do not expect exciting nightlife.

Xlendi, my own favourite retreat

At the opposite end of the island, a whole 8 miles from Mgarr is the delightful little bay of Xlendi. A row of hotels, shops and restaurant along the minute promenade look out over a narrow bay, home to a selection of fishing boats, swimmers, divers and holiday boats. This is a prime location to sit under an umbrella, enjoy a glass of wine and a good meal whichcan still include fish caught freshly today. Xlendi has an incredible 34 eating places so there is somewhere to match all tastes and budgets. When the day trippers return to Malta a blissful serenity descends and my favourite occupation is to sit on the fishermans seat overlooking the harbour and catch up on the gossip with the friendly locals

Calypso's Isle

Gozo is surrounded by an endless series of lovely bays, rocky inlets and a beautiful bathing beach at Ramla Bay. Overlooking Ramla bay is a small cave which is reputed to have been the home of Calypso, the beautiful sea goddess who ensnared Odysseus for seven years before he could tear himself away to return to his wife.
I have never yet had the good fortune to meet Calypso but I still find it difficult to tear myself away from her magical island.
