Dummer is the bestest village in the world! And that is all i am going to say as I don't want hundreds of house built in it. We love it the way it is. No streetlights, mains drainage or louts, a good village pub, a pretty and active church and lots to do that is homemade and fun.
2010 was the year of the Bells in All, Saints Church. In November they were taken down to be restored. So, for the first time in my nearly 40 years in the village, the bells will not be rung on Christmas Day. But the fundraising has been marvellous (although sometimes a bit heavy on the pocket!). We kicked off with a talk by Lady Aurelia Young about her father, the famous sculptor Oscar Neumann. It was a fascinating and often funny evening. We had a Rugby Lunch which was also good fun as we had several Welsh, Irish and Scottish (well, not so many of them) supporters cheering their teams on. We had an open day which included teas, strolls round gardens, a treasure hunt and much more & recently we had a fascinating talk about Jane Austen and her connection with the village. During the summer the Maidenthorne Singers performed in song the music of the times of the bells and short readings were also done of the time. Our bells encompass the times of The Armada, Trafalgar, Jane Austen's visits to the village, George Whitfields fire and brimstone sermon from All Saints pulpit as well as many interesting beneficiaries fo the village.
To learn more about our bells please visit our beautiful little church, All Saints. It is considered a gem in the Diocesan crown. It is built round two trees and has a lot of interesting features, although Cromwells lads took quite a bit of it, including all the stained glass! A very Royalist village, it suffered for that although there is a wooden testament to that loyalty supposedly presented buy Charles II to the village on the wall by the altar.
There are many lovelythatched houses in Dummer, the two oldet being 14th century. Glebe cottage was originally 3 houses but is now one.
On December 30th 2006 a tornado ripped through the village uprooting trees and completely shearing the tops from many... more travel advice
As we do not have street lights (thank god) the sunsets and night skies in the village are really fantastic. Just look... more travel advice
